Narrative Is Power
Real black voices and representation matter…
We aim to highlight the excellence of Black people in America and worldwide, telling stories—for us, by us. Our commitment to showcasing the best and brightest as well as highlighting disparities in Black life has been, and will always be, cornerstone to BLKURB.
Today, our voice is needed more than ever. Our commitment to making information a lifestyle is only the beginning. We will document social justice, health & wellness, beauty, fashion, sports, education and all of the important life moments that matter and contribute to the American fabric.

Undoubtedly we have no questions to ask which are unanswerable. We must trust the perfection of the creation so far, as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy. Every man’s condition is a solution in hieroglyphic to those inquiries he would put.

Our Editorial Policy
We uphold our mission of spotlighting style and beauty with intention, impact, and influence by committing ourselves to three major principles:
Be fair, honest, and respectful.
It is not our practice to highlight brands, products, and people we don’t stand behind, nor is it our practice to pass judgment on others’ choices. We never engage in shaming or disempowering language, and we take pride in our coverage of all people—women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community, among many others. We create a space that is open, celebratory, and fun.
Inform and inspire.
Through incisive celebrity profiles, sharp cultural commentary, and accessible beauty and style recommendations, we lift the curtain to give readers access to and share expert knowledge of what’s important now and what they’re going to care about next. Our elevated yet digestible content makes BLKURB a go-to source for pop culture happenings, celebrity outings, fashion and beauty trends, and social issues.
Use our platform for good.
Since our inception in 1994, we have garnered a large and engaged audience, and we take the responsibility that comes with its reach seriously. Here are some specific values we are committed to.
- We don’t support wearing fur or feathers: In 2018, we became the first major magazine to ban fur in its pages. We uphold this commitment, made in partnership with PETA, on our site and continue to highlight ethical sustainable developments in fashion.
- No dangerous health fads: We will never cover dubious diet fads or unnecessary “women’s intimacy” products that prey on shame or insecurity.
- No hate: When brands or venerated figures in fashion, beauty, and pop culture use their platforms to spread harmful messages, we reevaluate their space on our pages.
Product Reviews and Recommendations
Part of our mission is to help readers find best-in-class products worth their time, money, and attention. Our team includes experts across fashion, beauty, and wellness, and we bring these points of view into vetting the products we recommend and the brands with which we align. When we lack the appropriate expertise, we tap industry professionals—from celebrity hair stylists to top dermatologists—for a deeper understanding of trends, which products produce results, and what will stand the test of time.
Though brands may send us products to try for editorial consideration, we will never accept a product in exchange for coverage. We may earn affiliate revenue on commerce stories, which will be disclosed at the top of the article. Regardless, featured products are chosen because we feel confident about using and recommending them. Read more about our commerce guidelines, here.
Updates & Corrections
Updates: We update articles to ensure the most accurate and timely information. For example, a shopping guide of the best night creams needs to include what’s tried and tested and what’s in stock right now. Hair color trends for fall should reflect the styles most popular during that time period.
Fact Checking: Each article on our site is reviewed by an editor to ensure quotes are being used in context; names, dates, and any other data is verified; and studies cited are properly understood. Whenever possible, stories are reviewed by an independent fact-checker. We don’t report on information found on gossip blogs, tabloids, or other untrustworthy, unverifiable sources.
Corrections: In the event of an error or if a developing story changes after we’ve published it, we will update the article to reflect the best information available at the time. Timestamps are marked as “updated” whenever a story has been refreshed and republished, and when the situation calls for it, an Editor’s Note will be added to explain the change. If you notice an error or have other concerns about anything on our site, please reach out to letters@blkurb.com with “CORRECTION” in the subject line.
